Dupont-Kalorama Museum Walk Weekend
Once a year, the museums tucked around Dupont Circle and the Kalorama neighborhood throw open their doors for a free weekend, and it is one of our favorite low-key outings in DC. You get free admission to places that normally charge entry or operate on limited hours, all within a walkable stretch of Massachusetts Avenue and the surrounding side streets. The whole thing runs Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 4pm, so you can split it across both days or try to hit a few spots in a single afternoon. We usually pick two or three museums per visit because going at a kid's pace means spending more time than you expect at each one.
Anderson House is the real showstopper for families. It is this enormous Gilded Age mansion that belonged to a diplomat and his wife, and kids tend to love the grand staircase, the painted ceilings, and the fact that real people actually lived in this over-the-top place. The Phillips Collection has modern art in a more intimate setting, which works well because it does not overwhelm younger visitors the way the bigger museums can. Dupont Underground is a completely different vibe. It is a reclaimed streetcar station below Dupont Circle that hosts rotating art installations in this raw, underground space. My kids thought it was the coolest thing because it felt like exploring a secret tunnel. The Woodrow Wilson House rounds it out with a preserved 1920s home that gives older kids a window into what life looked like for a former president after leaving office.
What makes this weekend work so well for families is the walkability. You step out of one museum, walk a few blocks, and you are at the next one. There are coffee shops and restaurants along the route if anyone needs a snack break, and the Dupont Circle fountain is a natural halfway point where kids can run around for a bit. The neighborhood itself is beautiful to walk through, with embassies and row houses lining the streets. If your kids are old enough to handle a couple hours of walking, this is an easy, free Saturday that feels like you planned something special without having to drive anywhere or deal with National Mall crowds.

Parent Tips 💡
- Start at Anderson House. It opens right at 11am and tends to be less crowded in the first hour. The grand rooms grab kids' attention before they get tired.
- Bring a stroller if you need one. The sidewalks between museums are wide and flat. Most museums have stroller parking inside the entrance.
- Dupont Underground has stairs. The entrance involves going down into the old streetcar tunnel. It is accessible but keep that in mind with very young kids or heavy strollers.
- Plan a snack stop at Dupont Circle fountain. There are benches and shade around the circle, and several coffee shops and bakeries within a block.
- Pick two museums if you have toddlers. Trying to hit all four with little ones usually means rushing through the last couple. Two at a relaxed pace works better.
- Check each museum's website before you go. Some have special activities or family programming just for this weekend, and those fill up.
