Festival of the Earth
The Festival of the Earth is a Northern Virginia community celebration of nature, music, creativity, and togetherness. This year-after-year family favorite features a noon costume parade where kids in nature-themed costumes lead the community. If your kids dress as butterflies, bumblebees, flowers, or forest creatures, they'll join a parade that's inclusive and gives every kid a moment in the spotlight.
Beyond the parade, you'll find live bluegrass music, farm animals to pet, local artisan crafts and vendors, kids games, and food trucks. It's a neighborhood celebration, not a big commercial event. The vibe is relaxed — families gather to celebrate the natural world together, and it's the kind of day kids remember.

Parent Tips 💡
- Come for the noon costume parade! This is the heart of the festival. Kids in nature-themed costumes march together — it's inclusive, joyful, and gives every kid a special moment. Plan to arrive by 11:15am to secure a good viewing spot.
- Prepare a nature costume (but not required!): Animals, plants, insects, nature characters — anything earth/nature themed works. Or come in regular clothes; many families do! Store-bought or homemade both work.
- Farm animals are a huge hit with little ones: The petting zoo area is always crowded. If your toddler loves animals, arrive early for the best access or plan to return after the parade.
- Bring a blanket for the music: The bluegrass band is lively and family-friendly. Bring a picnic blanket, spread out on the lawn, and enjoy the music. Kids often dance and run around — it's that kind of vibe.
- Check event details in advance: Location and timing sometimes vary year to year. Verify the 2026 date, time, and venue location before heading out. Check Fairfax Parks & Recreation or local event listings.
- Food trucks are excellent: Various food vendors provide lunch and snack options. Come hungry! Vegetarian and dietary-specific options are usually available.
- Wear comfortable shoes and bring sunscreen: This is an outdoor, walking-around festival. May weather can be warm. Comfortable shoes and sun protection make the day more enjoyable.
