National Kids to Parks Day
National Kids to Parks Day is a nationwide push to get families outside and exploring their local parks. Virginia State Parks are official participants, and many parks across DC, Maryland, and Virginia host special programs, ranger-led activities, and family events for the day. This is less of a single event and more of a reason to finally visit that park you have been meaning to check out. Pack a picnic, grab the sunscreen, and pick a park. Great Falls, Rock Creek Park, Shenandoah, or any of the dozens of state and local parks in the DMV area all work. The National Park Trust website has a list of participating parks and events if you want something more structured.

- Check parktrust.org for a list of participating parks and special events near you.
- Pack a picnic. Most parks have picnic areas, and it makes the day feel like a real outing.
- Bring bug spray and sunscreen. Mid-May in the DMV means bugs are out.
- If you want structure, look for parks hosting ranger-led programs. Otherwise, just pick a trail and go.
