Smithsonian's National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute

🐘 NEW, Baby Elephant Linh Mai is here! The first Asian elephant born at the National Zoo in 25 years made her public debut on Earth Day (April 22). Linh Mai, whose name means "spirit blossom" in Vietnamese, was born on February 2, 2026, and now weighs over 460 pounds. She's bottle-fed every two hours and gains about a pound a day. Her keeper describes her as "sassy and playful." Linh Mai spends most of her time with Swarna, who has taken on a maternal role. Guest services staff are stationed throughout Elephant Trails to help visitors find her. You can also watch her on the Elephant Cam from home. This is the #1 reason to visit the zoo right now.

The National Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the United States and FREE year-round admission. Located in Rock Creek Park, this 163-acre zoo houses over 2,700 animals from around the world. Your kids will see lions, elephants (including baby Linh Mai!), giant pandas (Bao Li and Qing Bao!), cheetahs, red pandas, and thousands more.

Spring is the best time to visit. April and May have nicer weather, baby animals arrive, and the animals are most active in the cool mornings. There are fewer crowds than summer, and you'll still get to explore all the major exhibits. Bring comfortable walking shoes (the terrain has some hills), plenty of water, and plan to spend most of the day here. The Giant Panda House, Elephant Trails, Amazonia, and Bird House are kid favorites.
