Smithsonian's National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute

The National Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the United States and FREE year-round admission. Located in Rock Creek Park, this 163-acre zoo houses over 2,700 animals from around the world. Your kids will see lions, elephants, giant pandas (Bao Li and Qing Bao!), cheetahs, red pandas, and thousands more.

Spring is the best time to visit. April and May have nicer weather, baby animals arrive, and the animals are most active in the cool mornings. There are fewer crowds than summer, and you'll still get to explore all the major exhibits. Bring comfortable walking shoes (the terrain has some hills), plenty of water, and plan to spend most of the day here. The Giant Panda House, Amazonia, and Bird House are kid favorites.

Parent Tips 💡

• ✓Free timed-entry passes are NOT required: Unlike some Smithsonian museums, the National Zoo allows walk-ups anytime during operating hours. Just show up and go in! No reservations needed.
• ✓Go early for the best animal viewing: Animals are most active from 9am to 11am when it's cooler. Afternoons, many animals rest in shade or indoors. Arriving right at 8am opening is your best bet.
• ✓Wear extremely comfortable walking shoes: This is a 163-acre zoo with HILLS. Strollers are great for little ones, but expect to do a lot of walking. Bring a water bottle (refill stations throughout) and plan for frequent breaks.
• ✓Bring plenty of water and snacks: Concessions inside have limited options and higher prices. Pack water, fruit, and snacks for sustained energy throughout the day.
• ✓The Bird House and Small Mammal House are great for kids: These climate-controlled indoor exhibits are perfect on hot days and kids go wild for the birds and creatures up close.
• ✓Expect crowds Thursday–Sunday in spring: Weekdays (especially Tuesday–Wednesday) are quieter, with shorter lines at popular exhibits and easier animal viewing.
• ✓Check for baby animals in April/May: This is prime season for newborn animals. The zoo's website and social media often announce new arrivals — it's an extra special reason to visit.
