The Pigeon Comes to Washington, DC! — NMAH
The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History presents an interactive exhibit dedicated to Mo Willems' Pigeon character. If your kids have read "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!" or any of the Pigeon books, they'll love it. This exhibition brings the Pigeon's world to life through storytelling, interactive stations, and hands-on art activities.
Kids explore the creative process behind Mo Willems' characters, play with interactive storytelling stations, create their own art inspired by the books, and see why these books work so well with young readers. The exhibit is designed for ages 2–8. Combined with the rest of the museum's offerings (like the Julia Child's Kitchen), you can easily spend 2–3 hours here.

Parent Tips 💡
- Book your free timed pass in advance: The Pigeon exhibit is extremely popular with DC families. Reserve free timed passes on americanhistory.si.edu — weekend times fill up fast!
- Spend time with the whole museum, not just the exhibit: The National Museum of American History is incredible. The Julia Child's Kitchen, the Martin Luther King Jr. memorabilia, and the transportation exhibit all appeal to kids. Plan 2–3 hours.
- The whole museum is free and stroller-friendly: Wide corridors, elevators everywhere, changing tables in restrooms. Bring a stroller for little ones — the museum is massive and lots of walking.
- Combine with a National Mall walk: The museum is perfectly positioned on the National Mall. You can easily pop over to the National Zoo, other Smithsonians, or just enjoy a family walk between the museums.
- Bring water and snacks: The museum café has limited options and higher prices. Pack water, fruit, and snacks to keep energy up during your visit.
- Read the Pigeon books before you go: Kids get SO much more out of the exhibit if they've read "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!" Check your library for the series.
- Tuesday–Thursday mornings are quieter: If you can visit on a weekday morning, you'll avoid crowds. Weekends at the Smithsonian can get busy, especially around the Pigeon exhibit.
