Planet Word Museum
Welcome to the world's first voice-activated museum! Planet Word is dedicated to language, words, and storytelling. Kids speak, sing, play, and discover how words work in every single gallery. When you walk in, you'll find installations that respond to your voice — nothing passive about it. Kids ages 4–12 love this hands-on experience.
The Spoken World gallery is the centerpiece — words surround you from floor to ceiling with sound and visuals. The sing-along choir room is a hit with both kids and parents. Every corner has something to speak into, sing with, or create. Plan for 2 hours, though kids usually lose track of time. Admission is free, and timed passes are available online (recommended for weekends but not required).

Parent Tips 💡
- Reserve free timed passes online: They go fast on weekends! Go to planetwordmuseum.org and book your time slot in advance, especially for weekend visits.
- Plan 2 hours minimum: Kids can easily spend 2–3 hours exploring and interacting with the galleries. Budget time so they're not rushed — the experience is about play and discovery.
- The sing-along choir room is universally loved: Parents, grandparents, and kids all light up in this room. You'll see the biggest smiles here. Don't rush through!
- Little ones under 4 might get sensory-overwhelmed: The immersive galleries with lots of sounds and words can be intense for toddlers. The museum is great for ages 5+, but 4-year-olds are fine if they're comfortable with stimulation.
- The museum store has excellent kids' books: They curate beautiful, high-quality children's books and literary gifts. Plan time to browse — it's not a typical tourist gift shop.
- Combine with nearby restaurants: Planet Word is in the heart of downtown DC's Penn Quarter, surrounded by great restaurants and cafes. Plan to grab lunch or snacks nearby before or after your visit.
- Bring a reusable water bottle: There are water fountains throughout the museum, but carrying your own bottle keeps kids hydrated during active play.
