Shrek 2 Outdoor Movie at The Wharf

If you have never done an outdoor movie night at The Wharf, this is a great one to start with. Transit Pier sits right on the waterfront, and there is something about watching a movie with the boats and water behind the screen that makes the whole evening feel like a mini vacation. Shrek 2 is the kind of movie that works for everyone. The little kids laugh at Donkey, the older ones actually follow the plot, and the parents get to enjoy all the jokes that fly over the kids' heads. We have watched outdoor movies at a few spots around DC, and The Wharf consistently has the best setup for families.

Arrive early if you want a good spot. Families start laying down blankets well before the movie rolls, and the prime real estate near the screen goes fast. You do not need to bring chairs, but if you have a couple of low beach chairs they work well on the pier. The food situation is one of the best parts of the whole evening. The Wharf has plenty of restaurants and quick-serve spots within a two-minute walk, so you can grab tacos, pizza, ice cream, or just about anything else without missing the previews. Some families pack a full picnic, which works too. There are no formal food rules, and honestly the casual "dinner on a blanket" vibe is half the fun for kids.

The movie starts at 7:30pm, but the sun will still be setting when things kick off, so you get this nice golden light over the water as Shrek 2 opens. By the time Fairy Godmother starts singing "Holding Out for a Hero," it will be properly dark and the screen really pops. Bathrooms are accessible nearby, so you will not be stranded. The whole area is stroller-friendly, and there is plenty of space to let a restless toddler wander a bit without bothering other families. One thing to note: it can get breezy on the pier in the evening, so throw a light jacket or hoodie in the bag for each kid. We learned that one the hard way last summer. If you are looking for a low-stress, zero-cost Wednesday night with the family, this is about as good as it gets in DC.
