Spirit of Independence Festival 2026
The National Archives Foundation is setting up a tent that spans two city blocks on Constitution Avenue, right in front of the Archives building. Inside: living-history interpreters in period clothing, fife-and-drum performers, colonial food vendors, and hands-on activities for kids. The Declaration of Independence gets a special display for the occasion, which is worth the trip on its own. There's also a patriotic pet "yappy hour," if your dog is the flag-bandana type.
This is part of DC's celebration of America's 250th birthday, and the National Archives Foundation is hosting it across three days in early June. Daytime programming is free, but you need to reserve tickets online in advance. Your ticket also gets you complimentary access to the Archives Museum. Some evening events are separately ticketed. If your kids have been learning about the American Revolution in school, this is a solid way to make that textbook chapter feel real. They can see the actual Declaration, hear the music, try the food, and talk to people dressed as the colonists who signed it.

Parent Tips π‘
- Reserve free daytime tickets online in advance. They're free but required for entry. Don't show up assuming you can walk in β grab tickets from the Archives Foundation website as soon as they're available.
- Saturday is the best day for families. More programming and activities are scheduled for the weekend day. If you can only go once, pick Saturday.
- The Declaration of Independence display has a line. Go early in the day for a shorter wait. Kids under 5 might not have the patience for a long queue, so plan accordingly.
- Combine it with nearby museums. The National Gallery of Art and Natural History Museum are both a short walk away. Easy to make a full day of it.
- Bring cash for colonial food vendors. Some vendors are card-only, but not all of them. Having cash on hand avoids any surprises when your kid is already set on a turkey leg.
- Check the fife-and-drum performance schedule when you arrive. The performances happen at set times throughout the day. Grab a program at the entrance so you don't miss them.
