Armed Forces Cycling Classic
If your kids have never watched a professional bike race in person, the Armed Forces Cycling Classic is one of those events that will blow their minds. Pro cyclists fly through the streets of Clarendon and Crystal City at speeds that seem impossible, taking tight corners and drafting off each other in packs. We stood on the sidewalk with our kids last year and they could not believe how fast the riders were going. The whoosh of air as the pack goes by is something you can feel, and our son started jumping up and down every time they came around the corner. It is free to watch from anywhere along the course, so you just pick a spot and enjoy.
The race happens over Memorial Day weekend, with different events on Saturday and Sunday. The Clarendon Cup on Saturday features a course through the Clarendon neighborhood, which has a lively, festival-like atmosphere. There are usually food vendors, music, and a good crowd that makes it feel like a real event. The Crystal City race on Sunday is a different course with its own character. Both are fun, so if you can only make one day, either works. We prefer the Clarendon course because the restaurant options are better for grabbing lunch while you watch. The races go on for a few hours with different categories, so you can come and go as you please.
Seeing athletes compete up close has a way of sparking something in kids that watching it on TV never does. The event is well-organized and family-friendly, with good sight lines from most spots along the course. Bring folding chairs if you want to camp out at one spot, or walk the course to see different sections. Both venues are Metro-accessible, which is a huge plus since parking gets tight on race days. Clarendon Metro puts you right in the middle of the action. Bring sunscreen and water since you will be outside for a while, and there is limited shade along the course.
