Giant National Capital BBQ Battle 2026
For one weekend at the end of June, four blocks of Pennsylvania Avenue turn into a giant outdoor cookout. The BBQ Battle has been running for more than 30 years, and it lands right between the Capitol and the White House, so you can pair it with a walk on the Mall if the kids still have energy. Expect smoke, music from a few stages, and the smell of ribs hanging over the whole street.
It does get busy, especially Saturday afternoon, so it helps to go in with a plan. There is a kids area with games, and the BMX and skateboard demos tend to hold the attention of older kids who are done with eating. Bring cash and an appetite, and know that the sample portions add up fast.

Parent Tips π‘
- Go early on Sunday for smaller crowds. Saturday afternoon is the busiest stretch. Sunday late morning is calmer and the lines for food are shorter.
- Bring cash. Some vendors take cards, but cash moves faster and a few of the smaller stands are cash only.
- Pace the sampling. Tasting portions are small but they add up. Split plates so nobody fills up at the first booth.
- Pack water and sunscreen. The avenue has almost no shade in late June. A refillable water bottle and hats make a real difference.
- Make a meeting spot. It is crowded and loud. Pick a landmark in case anyone gets separated, and snap a photo of the kids that morning.
