Washington Capitals Development Camp 2026
If your kids are into hockey, or even just a little curious about it, the Capitals Development Camp is one of those summer gems you should know about. Every year the Caps bring in their top draft picks and young prospects for a week of on-ice training sessions at the MedStar Capitals Iceplex in Arlington. The best part? It's completely free to watch. You just walk in, grab a seat, and your kids get to see real NHL-caliber players skating, drilling, and scrimmaging right in front of them. We went last year on a whim because it was too hot to do anything outside, and my son was glued to the glass the entire time. He had no idea these guys were basically his age range (18, 19, 20 years old) and that blew his mind a little.
The Iceplex is a practice facility, not a huge arena, so everything feels close and personal. You can hear the pucks hitting the boards, the coaches calling out plays, and the skates cutting into the ice. My daughter, who doesn't care about hockey at all, still thought it was cool just because of how fast everyone moved. The sessions run about 90 minutes each, and there are usually two or three per day, so you can pick a time that works for your family. Between sessions, players sometimes walk through the lobby area, and if you're lucky and patient, some of them will stop to sign autographs or take a quick photo. Bring a Sharpie and a hat or jersey just in case.
One thing to keep in mind is that this is a real ice rink in July, so dress accordingly. We learned the hard way the first time. It might be 95 degrees outside, but inside it's genuinely cold, especially if you're sitting still for an hour and a half. Bring sweatshirts for the kids and maybe a blanket if you have younger ones. There's free parking at the Iceplex, which is a nice bonus, and it's not too far from the Ballston area if you want to grab lunch before or after. The camp runs July 1 through 6 this year. Check the Capitals website closer to the date for the exact session schedule because it changes day to day. This is a really easy, free outing that works for kids of all ages, whether they're die-hard hockey fans or just looking for something different to do during the first week of summer break.

Getting There πΊοΈ
Parent Tips π‘
- Bring a jacket because the rink is cold. Even in July, the Iceplex keeps it chilly. Layers are a must for the kids.
- Arrive early for the best seats. Seating is first come, first served, and the good spots go fast.
- Check the Capitals website for the daily schedule. Session times change from day to day, so look before you go.
- Bring a marker and something for autographs. Players sometimes stop to sign after practice. A jersey, hat, or even a piece of paper works.
- Snacks are allowed inside. There are limited food options at the rink, so pack something for the kids.
- Sessions run about 90 minutes each. That's a good amount of time for kids before they get restless.
