Kennedy Center: Matheus Fonseca
If you haven't taken your kids to the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage yet, this Saturday is a great excuse to start. Every evening at 6pm, the Kennedy Center puts on a free performance in the Grand Foyer. No tickets, no reservations. You just walk in, find a spot, and enjoy. This week it's Brazilian troubadour Matheus Fonseca, and the Grand Foyer is one of those spaces that makes the whole experience feel special. The room is massive, the ceilings are high, and the acoustics carry the music without being too loud for little ears.
The best part for families is how low-pressure it is. If your toddler gets wiggly or your older kid loses interest, you can step outside onto the terrace and take in the views of the Potomac River. The REACH outdoor campus is right there too, and they sometimes have film screenings on the Video Wall around dusk, so there's a good chance you'll find something else going on after the concert wraps up.
The show runs about an hour, which honestly is the sweet spot for bringing kids to a live performance. Long enough to feel like a real outing, short enough that nobody melts down. If you're coming by Metro, take the Blue, Orange, or Silver Line to Foggy Bottom and hop on the free Kennedy Center shuttle. It runs every 15 minutes and drops you right at the front door. You can also drive and park in the Kennedy Center garage for $15 in the evening. This is one of those only-in-DC experiences where you get a world-class venue and free entertainment on a Saturday night.

Getting There 🗺️
Parent Tips 💡
- Free shuttle runs every 15 minutes from Foggy Bottom Metro (Blue/Orange/Silver Lines). It drops you right at the door.
- No tickets needed. Just show up and find a seat in the Grand Foyer. First come, first served.
- Show starts at 6pm and lasts about an hour. That's a solid length for kids before they start getting antsy.
- Walk the REACH outdoor campus after. Check if they have a film screening on the Video Wall at dusk.
- Kennedy Center garage parking is $15 for the evening. Street parking nearby is limited, so the garage or shuttle are your best bets.
