National Gallery of Art Block Party
This is the National Gallery's biggest public event ever, a full-campus block party spanning both buildings and the Sculpture Garden. Kids can build with LEGOs alongside a master builder in the Rotunda (get there early, this draws a crowd). There's an art and poetry lab where kids make collage quilts, and the Racing Presidents mascots show up for photos. The whole thing runs from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, June 6, and everything is completely free. No tickets, no registration, just walk up. For families who want to introduce their kids to art in a way that feels fun instead of forced, this is the best opportunity you'll find in DC all summer.
The event runs all day with music, food trucks, and curator-led gallery talks sized for families. The East Building has hands-on artmaking stations where kids can paint, draw, and collage without worrying about making a mess. The Sculpture Garden has a DJ and open space where kids can run around between activities. There are also sketching sessions led by Gallery educators, and a sound bath experience that's surprisingly calming for kids who need a break from the energy. If your kids are into building, the LEGO station in the Rotunda is the main attraction. A professional LEGO master builder guides the group, and kids get to contribute pieces to a collaborative sculpture. It fills up fast, so head there first if it's on your list.
What really makes this event stand out is how much ground there is to cover. You can easily spend the full six hours moving between buildings, grabbing food from the trucks parked along the Mall side, and ducking into the galleries when you need air conditioning. The curator-led talks are short and geared toward families, so even school-age kids can follow along. My kids especially loved the Racing Presidents photo opportunity. There's something about seeing those giant mascot heads in the middle of a world-class art museum that just cracks kids up. Plan to arrive close to 10am to beat the midday crowds, and wear comfortable shoes because you'll be walking between the West Building, East Building, and Sculpture Garden all day. Metro is the best way to get here since parking downtown on a Saturday is a headache.

Getting There πΊοΈ
Parent Tips π‘
- Arrive early for the LEGO station: The Rotunda LEGO build is the most popular activity and fills up fast. Get there close to 10am if this is a priority for your kids.
- Bring a stroller for younger kids: There's a lot of walking between the West Building, East Building, and Sculpture Garden. Little legs get tired quickly on this campus.
- The Sculpture Garden fountain is great for toddlers: Even if they're not into art yet, the open space and water feature keep them happy while you enjoy the DJ and food.
- Pack snacks: Food trucks will be there but lines can get long, especially around lunch. Having something in your bag avoids hangry meltdowns.
- The East Building courtyard has AC: If June heat hits, duck inside. The courtyard is cool and spacious, and the artmaking stations are there too.
- Wear comfortable shoes: You'll be on your feet all day across multiple buildings. This is not a flip-flops kind of outing.
