Free Outdoor Movies at the REACH, Kennedy Center
The Kennedy Center screens free movies on the REACH plaza most Fridays from late May through July, and it's a solid family outing. You bring a blanket or low chairs, set up on the grass, and watch a movie as the sun goes down over the Potomac. The lineup mixes family titles like Wonka and The Lion King with grown-up picks like The Bourne Identity, so check the schedule before you go if your kids are young. The films start around sundown, roughly 8:30pm in late May, later as summer goes on.
The REACH campus is that newer outdoor expansion behind the main Kennedy Center building, with landscaped lawns and walkways. It's a nice spot even if you show up early and just let kids run around. There's usually space to spread out, though popular movies (The Incredibles, The Lion King) fill up faster. No food vendors on-site for these screenings, so pack your own snacks or grab something at the Kennedy Center cafe before it closes.

Getting There πΊοΈ
Parent Tips π‘
- Arrive 30β45 minutes before sundown. Claim a spot on the lawn, let kids run around, and settle in. The REACH lawns are open and flat, good for toddlers to burn off energy before the movie.
- Movies start late for young kids. Sundown in late May is around 8:30pm, which means the movie won't end until 10:30pm or later. Bring pajamas and plan for a late bedtime. This works better for kids 5+ who can handle it.
- Bring layers. Even in summer, it cools down by the river after dark. A light jacket or sweatshirt for everyone is a good call.
- Pack all your food. The cafe closes before the movie starts, and there are no concession stands during the screening. Sandwiches, popcorn, juice boxes, make it a picnic.
- Use the free shuttle from Foggy Bottom Metro. It's easier than driving, especially with kids. The shuttle drops you right at the building, and you walk around to the REACH.
- Best family-friendly picks: Wonka (Jun 6), The Lion King (Jun 27), and The Incredibles (Jul 11) are the most kid-appropriate in the lineup. Check ratings before bringing young ones to other screenings.
