Bluegrass Stamp Celebration at the Postal Museum
The National Postal Museum is throwing an evening party to celebrate the new Bluegrass Forever stamp, and it's one of those events that just works for families. Live bluegrass bands play in the museum's atrium while kids get hands-on with stamp-making activities at tables set up around the space. The museum stays open late until 8pm, which means you can actually swing by after work without feeling like you're racing the clock. It's right next to Union Station, so if you take the Red Line you're basically there.
The Postal Museum is honestly one of DC's best-kept secrets for kids. They have a huge stamp collection, old mail trucks you can climb into, and interactive exhibits about how mail actually gets from point A to point B. My kids always spend way too long in the sorting room. This evening event adds live music to the mix, which gives the whole place a different feel than a typical weekday visit. Kids can design their own stamps, listen to bluegrass in the atrium, and wander through the exhibits in a more relaxed setting without the school-group crowds.
The whole thing is free and air conditioned, which on a July evening in DC is worth the trip alone. I'd say grab dinner at Union Station before you head over, or just pack some snacks. It's the kind of low-key outing that doesn't require a ton of planning but still feels like a real night out with the kids.

Parent Tips π‘
- Take the Red Line to Union Station. The museum is a 2-minute walk from the Metro exit, so you can skip the parking hassle entirely.
- Arrive by 6pm to get the most out of the evening. Exhibits close at 8pm and you'll want time for both the music and the activities.
- The stamp activities are surprisingly engaging for kids. Even younger ones who don't know much about stamps get into the hands-on crafts.
- Union Station has plenty of food options. Grab dinner before or after the event if you don't want to pack snacks.
- The museum is fully air conditioned. On a hot July evening, this is a welcome break from the heat outside.
