17th Street Block Party (Pride)
If you have never been to the 17th Street Block Party during Pride weekend, here is the deal: it is one of DC's biggest street parties, and during the daytime hours, it is honestly a great time for families. The stretch of 17th Street NW between P and R Streets in Dupont Circle gets closed to traffic and filled with food vendors, live music stages, and a general celebration energy that is hard to beat. My kids loved it last time we went because, let's be real, any event where they can eat tacos on the sidewalk while watching people dance is a winner in their book.
The food options are solid. You will find everything from empanadas and grilled corn to ice cream and lemonade, so even the pickiest little eater in your crew should be able to find something. Most vendors take cards, but having some cash on you does not hurt. The live entertainment runs all day, and during the afternoon there is usually music and performances that are totally fine for younger kids.
One thing to know: this event shifts into more of an adult party scene as the evening goes on. We always plan to arrive around noon and leave by 4 PM or so. That window gives you the best mix of food, entertainment, and a crowd that is still pretty mellow. Strollers are technically possible but the streets get packed, so a carrier works better if your little one still needs a lift. Bring water, wear sunscreen, and enjoy the party.

Getting There πΊοΈ
Parent Tips π‘
- Go during daytime hours: The 12-4 PM window is the most family-friendly. The crowd is relaxed, the music is upbeat, and your kids will have a blast.
- Food vendors accept cards and cash: Most booths take both, but a few smaller vendors might be cash only. Bring a mix to be safe.
- Plan to leave by late afternoon: The event gets more adult-oriented after 5-6 PM. Earlier hours are where the family fun is.
- Skip the stroller: The streets get really crowded, and pushing a stroller through a packed block party is no fun. A baby carrier works much better here.
- Bring water: Hydration stations may be limited, and it is June in DC. Pack water bottles for everyone, and sunscreen too.
