Capital Pride Parade + Family Fun Festival

We've been taking the kids to Capital Pride for a few years now, and the Family Fun Festival at Stead Park is honestly one of the best parts of the whole weekend. It runs Saturday morning from 11 AM to 3 PM, and it's set up specifically with families in mind. There's an inflatable obstacle course that my kids could not get enough of last year. They went through it probably six or seven times before I finally dragged them away. There are also glitter tattoos, and I'll warn you right now, those things last about three washes. So if your kid picks a giant rainbow butterfly on their cheek, you're living with it for a few days.

Story time happens in a shaded area of the park, which is nice if you need a break from running around. The craft stations keep younger kids busy, and there's enough going on that you won't hear "I'm bored" even once. At 3 PM on Saturday the parade kicks off through downtown, and it's loud, colorful, and a lot of fun to watch. Bring ear protection for toddlers and little ones because the music trucks really turn it up. Sunday is the main festival with live performances all day, and this year Maren Morris is headlining, so that's worth planning around if you're a fan.

The whole weekend is free and genuinely welcoming. It's also a great chance to talk with your kids about different families and what Pride means. If you only go to one part, make it the Saturday morning Family Fun Festival at Stead Park. That's the sweet spot for families with young kids.

Getting There πŸ—ΊοΈ

METRODupont Circle (Red Line) is the closest station to Stead Park. About a 5-minute walk to the festival area.
PARKINGStreet parking is very limited during the parade, especially Saturday afternoon. If you drive, arrive early Saturday morning or use a garage. Honestly, Metro is the better call.
BIKEBiking is a great option. There are Capital Bikeshare stations near Stead Park and along the parade route. Lock up well since the area gets crowded.
