Capital Jewish Museum: Free Family Day
The Capital Jewish Museum is one of those smaller DC museums that doesn't get as much attention as the Smithsonians, but it's honestly a great spot for families. On July 5th, they're opening their doors for a free Family Day with activities designed specifically for kids. The museum is at 575 3rd Street NW, right near Judiciary Square, so it's easy to get to by Metro. The building itself is beautiful and modern, and the galleries are small enough that you won't spend the whole day dragging tired kids from room to room. For families with younger children, that's a real plus. You can see everything comfortably in about an hour or two.
The Family Day programming includes hands-on art and craft stations, which are the big draw for kids. Expect projects like collage making, drawing activities, and other creative stations that are set up at a level where 4 to 10 year olds can actually participate without a parent doing all the work. There are also storytelling sessions throughout the day, which are great for giving everyone's feet a break while the kids sit and listen. The guided gallery tours are designed with families in mind, so the guides talk about the exhibits in ways that kids can understand and connect with. It's not a lecture. They ask questions, point out interesting objects, and keep things moving at a pace that works for short attention spans.
Since admission is free for the entire day, there's really no reason not to check it out if you're in the area. The day after the Fourth of July is usually a quiet day around DC, and this is a nice, low-key activity that doesn't require sitting in traffic or finding parking (take the Red Line to Judiciary Square and you're basically there). The museum is air-conditioned, which is a big deal in early July, and the interactive exhibits give kids something to touch and explore rather than just look at. The storytelling sessions run on a set schedule, so check when you arrive so you don't miss one. If you're looking for something calm and creative to do with the kids the day after all the fireworks and celebrations, this is a solid pick.
