Citi DC Open Kids' Day
The Mubadala Citi DC Open brings pro tennis to Rock Creek Park every summer, and the tournament opens with a morning built just for kids. Kids' Day is Saturday, July 25, with registration at 7:30am and programming from 7:45 to 9:15am at the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center. Kids ages 5 to 12 get in free with registration, and they spend the morning playing tennis games and learning skills on the same grounds where the pros compete that week.
Yes, that's an early start, but the timing works in your favor. You're done by 9:15, it's not brutally hot yet, and the kids have burned off a full morning of energy before most families have left the house. July 25 is also qualifying weekend for the tournament, which runs through August 2, so if your kid catches the tennis bug you can stick around the grounds. Register online ahead of time since spots are limited.

Parent Tips π‘
- Register before you show up. Kids' Day spots are limited and registration is online through the tournament site. Do it this week, not the night before.
- Sunscreen everyone at home. The courts are in full sun even at 8am in July.
- Bring water bottles. The kids will be running the whole time. A change of shirt for the ride home isn't a bad idea either.
- No gear needed. Programming is set up for beginners. If your child has a racket they love, check your registration confirmation for what to bring.
- Make a Rock Creek morning of it. The Rock Creek Park Nature Center and Planetarium is a short drive away and opens later in the morning, so it stacks nicely after tennis.
