The Fairfax County Carnival & Fair sets up at Frying Pan Farm Park in Herndon from July 30 through August 2, and the gate is free. Frying Pan is a working farm park the rest of the year, so on top of the carnival midway you get the regular farm animals, plus baked-goods and produce competitions, animal demos, and the kind of old-fashioned contests (pie eating, watermelon seed spitting) that kids find hilarious. It's a good mix of fair rides and actual farm, which is harder to find than you'd think.

Friday, July 31 is Big Truck Night from 5 to 7pm, when kids can climb into fire trucks, diggers, and other big machines up close. The rides cost money (wristbands or tickets), but walking the fair, visiting the animals, and watching the contests don't. Parking is free at the park. Because admission is free, weekend evenings draw a crowd, so going earlier in the day or on Thursday is the lower-key option.

• ✓It's free, so keep a budget for rides. Admission and parking cost nothing, which is great, but the carnival rides are extra. Decide on a ride budget or wristband before you walk in so it doesn't creep.
• ✓Don't skip the farm side. Frying Pan's animals and Kidwell Farm are the part you can't get at a regular carnival. The barns are usually calmer than the midway.
• ✓Friday is Big Truck Night. If your kid loves diggers and fire trucks, the 5–7pm window on July 31 is the highlight. Go early in that slot before the popular trucks get mobbed.
• ✓Go early or on a weekday. Free admission means weekend evenings get busy. Thursday or an afternoon start gives you shorter ride lines and easier parking.
• ✓Closed-toe shoes and sunscreen. It's a farm park, so expect dust, dirt, and open sun in spots. Sturdy shoes and sunscreen beat sandals.
• ✓Bring cash for food and games. Some stands take cards, but cash is faster at the food and game booths and a few may be cash-only.
