Prince William County Fair
Billed as Virginia's biggest county fair, the Prince William County Fair runs nine days, July 31 through August 8, at the fairgrounds in Manassas. It packs in a lot: a full carnival midway, a rodeo, a demolition derby, livestock and 4-H exhibits, tractor pulls, nightly concerts, and a long row of fair food. Gate admission starts around $13, with the rides priced separately. Nine days means you can pick a quieter weeknight instead of fighting the Saturday crowd.
It's a real fairground, so plan for sun, dust, and a lot of walking. Wristband days let kids ride all they want for one price, which usually pencils out better than single tickets if they're ride-obsessed. The grandstand shows (rodeo, derby, tractor pulls) run on their own schedule, so check the lineup before you go if there's one your kid has their heart set on. Evenings bring the concerts and the lit-up midway; mornings and early afternoons are easier with little ones.

Parent Tips π‘
- Pick a weeknight to dodge crowds. Nine days gives you options. A Tuesday or Wednesday is far calmer than the Saturday peak, with shorter ride lines.
- Check the grandstand schedule first. The rodeo, derby, and tractor pulls happen at set times on set days. Look it up before you go so you don't miss the one your kid wants.
- Wristband days for ride-lovers. If your kids will ride all afternoon, an unlimited wristband usually beats single tickets. Confirm which days offer it on the fair site.
- Ear protection for the loud stuff. The derby and tractor pulls are genuinely loud. Bring ear defenders for sensitive kids or watch from higher up and farther back.
- Sun, dust, and good shoes. It's a big open fairground. Closed-toe shoes, hats, sunscreen, and water make the difference on a hot August day.
- Bring cash and set a food budget. Fair food adds up fast. Decide on a number ahead of time, and keep cash on hand for the stands that don't take cards.
