Great Falls 4th of July Hometown Celebration
If you want your kids to experience a Fourth of July that feels like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting, Great Falls is the place. This little town in Fairfax County puts on an old-fashioned Independence Day celebration every year that's completely different from the big city events in DC. The parade winds through the village center, and it's the kind of parade where you actually know the people marching. Local scout troops, little league teams, fire trucks, and families on decorated bikes all come through. It's small on purpose, and that's what makes it so charming for families with young kids.
After the parade, there's live music, games for the kids, and plenty of food. The whole celebration happens in and around the Great Falls Village Centre, so everything is walkable once you park. The kids' games area usually has classic stuff like sack races, face painting, and water balloon tosses. Nothing fancy, nothing that requires standing in line for 45 minutes. Just simple, fun activities that keep little ones happy. The live music goes through the morning and into the afternoon, and there are food vendors selling the usual Fourth of July staples. We grabbed hot dogs and lemonade last time and found a shady spot under a tree to eat.
What I really like about this event is how manageable it is for families with younger children. The crowds are there, but it's nothing like being downtown. You can see the parade from anywhere along the route without showing up two hours early to save a spot. The pace is relaxed, and if your toddler has a meltdown (it happens), you're five minutes from your car. Streets close for the parade, so plan to park a block or two out and walk in. Get there on the early side because street parking does fill up. If your family is looking for a low-key, community-style Fourth of July in Northern Virginia, this is one of the best options out there.

Parent Tips π‘
- This has a small-town feel that's hard to find near DC. If you want something quiet and community-driven instead of a massive downtown event, this is it.
- Walk from your parking spot since streets close for the parade. Park a block or two out and expect a short walk to the Village Centre.
- Bring lawn chairs. You'll want somewhere to sit while watching the parade and listening to the live music.
- The parade is short but fun. Don't expect a two-hour procession. It's a quick, sweet community parade, and kids love it.
- Great for younger kids who get overwhelmed by bigger events. The crowds and noise level are totally manageable for toddlers and preschoolers.
- Food vendors are on-site. Hot dogs, lemonade, and other Fourth of July favorites are available, so you don't have to pack a full cooler.
