Mount Vernon's An American Celebration
There's something about spending the Fourth of July at George Washington's actual home that hits different. Mount Vernon goes all out for Independence Day with a full day of activities from 9am to 5pm, and it's one of the most memorable ways to celebrate the holiday with kids. The big draw is meeting "George Washington" himself, played by a historical actor who stays in character the entire time. My kids were genuinely starstruck. They asked him questions about the Revolution and he answered every single one without breaking character. That alone was worth the trip.
The Revolutionary War military camp is set up on the grounds with soldiers in full uniform, demonstrating drills and firing muskets. Kids can walk through the camp, talk to the soldiers, and see what life was like during the war. It's hands-on history in a way that textbooks just can't match. Then there's the ice cream making activity, where families churn ice cream the way they did in the 1700s. Fair warning: this one fills up fast, so head there early in the day if your kids want to try it. The daytime fireworks at 1pm are a nice touch, especially for younger kids who can't stay up until 9 or 10 at night. They're not as big as the nighttime shows in DC, but for little ones, they're plenty exciting.
The admission price is $30 for adults and $16 for kids ages 6 to 11. Kids under 5 get in free, which is a nice break if you've got a toddler. Parking is included with your ticket, so you won't get hit with extra fees when you arrive. Plan to spend most of the day here because there's a lot to see and do. The grounds are mostly outdoors with limited shade, so bring sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water. July in Virginia is no joke. If you want to tour the mansion itself, you'll need a separate timed entry, so grab that when you first arrive before slots fill up. Overall, this is one of those Fourth of July experiences that feels special and educational without being stuffy or boring for the kids.
