We showed up at Brookside Gardens on a Saturday morning without much of a plan. It turned out to be one of the best mornings we've had in a while. The park is part of Wheaton Regional Park in Montgomery County, and the first thing you notice when you pull in is how well maintained everything is. The visitor center has a stone and wood facade with flower beds right at the entrance with tulips, wildflowers, all blooming. There's a gift shop inside with garden-themed souvenirs and books, plus an information desk if you need a map. Once you walk past the visitor center, the park opens up and it's bigger than you'd expect. Wide, paved paths wind through open lawns, past mature trees, and down toward a pond with a Japanese-style wooden bridge. That bridge area was the highlight for us. There's a weeping willow hanging over the water, families sitting on the grass, and a covered pavilion (kind of a gazebo) tucked into the trees on the far side. It looks like something out of a postcard. We spent a good amount of time near the pond watching the ducks and turtles. There's a larger lake further in with a "Fish Responsibly" sign (so yes, people fish here too). The whole area is surrounded by trees and feels surprisingly quiet for being minutes off University Boulevard. One thing we really appreciated: there's a playground near the gardens with nature-themed climbing structures. It was busy but not overcrowded. Good for kids roughly 2 to 8 years old. The paths are flat, paved, and wide. If you're pushing a stroller, you'll have no issues at all. We saw plenty of families with strollers and wagons, and there's nothing you need to worry about in terms of terrain. Inside the visitor center, there are signs pointing to adult classrooms, children's classrooms, and an auditorium. We didn't catch a class this time, but it looks like they run seasonal programs for kids (something to look into if you want a more structured visit). Parking is free and right at the entrance. We got there around 10am and found a spot easily. By the time we left around noon, the lot was filling up, so earlier is better on weekends.
What We Liked
The Japanese garden area with the bridge and pond is genuinely beautiful. The playground gives kids a place to burn energy without leaving the park. Everything is free. Stroller access is easy everywhere. The variety of trees and flowers, Japanese maples with their deep red leaves makes for a pretty walk even if your kids aren't interested in botany.
What Could Be Better
There's no food inside the park. Bring snacks or plan to eat somewhere nearby. The bathrooms are in the visitor center, which can be a bit of a walk if you're deep in the gardens. And there's limited shade near the playground, so bring sunscreen if you're going midday.
