7 of the 50 activities — the most popular spots families visit every summer
Two million visitors a year come here and it's not hard to see why. Your kids get to see giant pandas Bao Li and Qing Bao, baby elephant Linh Mai, lions, gorillas, and reptiles — all for free. The Kids' Farm lets toddlers touch goats and donkeys. It's one of the only free zoos in the country, accessible by Metro, and big enough to fill an entire morning without getting bored.
1.2 million visitors a year and a 92/100 TripExpert score. Over 16,000 animals including dolphins, sharks, sea turtles, and a rooftop tropical rainforest where birds fly around your head. The stingray touch pool is where most kids spend the longest — they can actually pet the rays as they swim by. It's pricey, but many parents say it's the single best family outing in the entire DMV region.
One of the highest-rated attractions in the DMV with a 4.8 Google rating. The Potomac River crashes through a series of dramatic waterfalls just 20 minutes from DC — it looks like something you'd find in a national park out west, not in suburban Virginia. The overlook trail is easy enough for kids, and the picnic areas are great for a family lunch. On a summer morning before it gets crowded, this is one of the most spectacular things you can show your children in the entire region.
350,000 visitors a year come to this National Park Service site where a 1921 Dentzel carousel still spins — 50,000 kids ride it every year. Beyond the carousel, Glen Echo runs summer art classes for kids (ceramics, painting, theater workshops) and has an adventure playground surrounded by trees. It's the kind of place where your kids run around for three hours and you sit on a bench reading. The art classes book up fast in June, so register early.
The most visited Smithsonian museum — 3.3 million visitors in 2024. Dinosaur skeletons that tower over your kids, a butterfly pavilion where they land on your hands, the Hope Diamond, and an ocean hall with a life-size whale model. Small kids love the Discovery Room where they can touch fossils and bones. On hot summer days, this is perfect because it's air-conditioned and free.
3.1 million visitors and 63,000 TripAdvisor reviews make this one of the most-reviewed museums in the world. The recently renovated galleries are stunning — your kids can see the Wright Brothers' actual plane, touch a real moon rock, and watch IMAX films about space exploration. The flight simulators ($8–$10 extra) are worth it for kids who dream of being astronauts or pilots.
12 million visitors a year make National Harbor the most-visited destination on this entire list. The Capital Wheel (roda gigante) gives you views of the Potomac and DC skyline. There's a carousel, mini golf, a mirror maze, and the giant "Awakening" sculpture on the beach that kids love climbing on. Over 160 shops and restaurants mean you can spend a full day here without running out of things to do.
