Animals & Zoos

#1

National Zoo

FREE All Ages Woodley Park, DC

One of the only free zoos in the country, and it's right on the Red Line. Summer mornings before 10am are your best bet because the animals are actually moving around before the heat kicks in. The pandas, elephants, and big cats are the headliners, but my kids always end up spending the most time at the Kids' Farm petting the goats.

Highlights

🐼Giant Pandas: Still the main draw. Get there early because the line at the panda house gets long by mid-morning.
🐘Elephant Trails: Watch the elephants splash around in their pool on hot days. Kids love it.
🐦Kids' Farm: Goats, donkeys, cows. Hands-on and perfect for toddlers who want to touch everything.
📍 3001 Connecticut Ave NW, DC
🕐 Daily 8am-6pm (summer)
💰 Free (parking $30)
🚇 Woodley Park or Cleveland Park Metro (Red Line)
Summer tip: Arrive at 8am when gates open. By 10am it's packed and by noon the animals hide from the heat. Bring water, wear sunscreen, and take the downhill route from Connecticut Ave entrance.
#2

Leesburg Animal Park

$14.95/person Ages 1-8 Leesburg, VA

This is a small, hands-on farm where kids can actually feed and pet the animals instead of just looking at them through glass. My toddler fed a llama from his hand and talked about it for two weeks. Pony rides, a petting zoo, and animal encounters make this one of the best options for little kids in the summer.

Highlights

🐎Petting Zoo: Goats, sheep, bunnies, and more. Kids can feed them with cups of pellets ($3).
🏇Pony Rides: Short loop rides for small kids. Calm ponies, patient staff.
🦉Exotic Animals: Zebras, camels, lemurs, and a giraffe you can feed by hand.
📍 19270 James Monroe Hwy, Leesburg, VA
🕐 Tues-Sun 10am-5pm (summer)
💰 $14.95/person (under 2 free)
🚗 45 min from DC
Summer tip: Go on a weekday morning to avoid birthday party crowds. Bring a hat and sunscreen because there's limited shade. Buy the animal feed cups at the entrance.
#3

National Aquarium Baltimore

$39.95 adults / $29.95 kids Ages 2+ Baltimore, MD

Yes, it's pricey. But on a 95-degree day when you need four hours of air conditioning and entertainment, the aquarium earns every dollar. The dolphin show is the big draw, but the jellyfish room is honestly what my kids remember most. Thousands of moon jellies glowing in dark blue light, pulsing in slow motion. Even the toddler stood still and watched.

Highlights

🐬Dolphin Show: 20-minute presentation in a huge amphitheater. Arrive 15 minutes early for good seats.
🦘Jellyfish Room: Dark, cool, and mesmerizing. Great reset spot when kids get overstimulated.
🐠Shark Alley: Walk through a glass tunnel with sharks swimming overhead. Kids lose their minds.
📍 501 E Pratt St, Baltimore, MD
🕐 Daily 9am-5pm (summer, extended Fri-Sat)
💰 $39.95 adults / $29.95 kids (3-11)
🚗 50 min from DC
Summer tip: Buy timed tickets online. Friday after 5pm is discounted. Pair with lunch at the Inner Harbor. The rooftop rainforest exhibit gets hot in summer, so do it first while you still have energy.
#4

Calvert Marine Museum

$14 adults / $7 kids Ages 3+ Solomons, MD

A hidden gem on the Chesapeake Bay that combines river otters, prehistoric fossils, and boat rides into one visit. The otters are the star attraction for kids. You can watch them play, swim, and eat from just a few feet away. The fossil collection has real megalodon teeth that are bigger than your hand.

Highlights

🦦River Otters: Indoor and outdoor habitat. Feeding times are the best time to visit.
🦀Fossil Collection: Real megalodon teeth, ancient whale bones, and a paleontology dig area for kids.
Boat Rides: Summer-only boat tours on the Patuxent River. Calm water, beautiful views.
📍 14150 Solomons Island Rd, Solomons, MD
🕐 Daily 10am-5pm
💰 $14 adults / $7 kids (5-12)
🚗 90 min from DC
Summer tip: Make it a day trip. Visit the museum in the morning, grab lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants in Solomons, then walk the boardwalk. Check the boat tour schedule online before you go.
#5

Pirate Adventures on the Chesapeake

$24/person Ages 3-10 Annapolis, MD

Kids dress up in pirate costumes, board a real boat decorated like a pirate ship, and go on a treasure hunt on the water. The crew stays in character the whole time, there are water cannons to shoot at "enemy ships," and they actually find a treasure chest floating in the bay. It sounds cheesy but kids go absolutely wild for it.

Highlights

🏴‍☠️Full Pirate Experience: Face painting, costumes, swords, and treasure maps before you even board.
💦Water Cannons: Kids fire water cannons from the ship. Everyone gets a little wet, which is perfect in summer.
📦Treasure Hunt: The boat "finds" a treasure chest in the water. Every kid gets a share of the loot (plastic coins and gems).
📍 311 3rd St, Annapolis, MD
🕐 Multiple daily sailings, June-Sept
💰 $24/person (under 2 free)
🚗 45 min from DC
Summer tip: Book at least a week ahead because summer sailings sell out fast. Bring sunscreen and hats. The 10am sailing is the least crowded. Combine with lunch and ice cream in downtown Annapolis.
#6

Catoctin Wildlife Preserve

$22 adults / $18 kids Ages 2+ Thurmont, MD

A small, walkable zoo tucked into the Catoctin Mountains near Camp David. It's not as big as the National Zoo, but the trade-off is that you're much closer to the animals and the whole place takes about two hours. The petting area lets kids get right up next to goats, deer, and alpacas. Feels like a private zoo on a quiet weekday.

Highlights

🦁Close Encounters: Bears, bobcats, monkeys, and tropical birds on a shaded walking path.
🐎Petting Area: Hands-on zone with gentle animals. Feed cups available at the entrance.
🌳Mountain Setting: Shaded trails and cooler temperatures than DC. A real break from the summer heat.
📍 13019 Catoctin Furnace Rd, Thurmont, MD
🕐 Daily 9am-5pm (summer)
💰 $22 adults / $18 kids (2-12)
🚗 70 min from DC
Summer tip: Combine with Cunningham Falls State Park (15 min away) for a full mountain day. The shaded paths keep it 5-10 degrees cooler than DC, which matters in August.

Outdoors & Nature

#7

Great Falls Park

$20/vehicle Ages 3+ McLean, VA

The Potomac River drops through a series of massive waterfalls just 15 miles from DC, and it looks like something out of a national park out west. Kids are immediately impressed by the power of the water. Three overlook platforms give you safe, fenced views. The easy trails along the river are stroller-friendly and flat enough for little legs.

Highlights

🌊Waterfall Overlooks: Three viewing platforms, all fenced. The roar of the falls is exciting for kids.
🚶Easy River Trail: Flat, shaded, and stroller-friendly. About 1 mile along the river with great views.
🧗Billy Goat Trail: For older kids (8+) who want rock scrambling and adventure. Section C is the easiest.
📍 9200 Old Dominion Dr, McLean, VA
🕐 Daily 7am-sunset
💰 $20/vehicle (NPS pass accepted)
🚗 20 min from DC
Summer tip: Arrive before 9am on weekends. The parking lot fills up and they close the gate. Bring lots of water and bug spray. No swimming allowed, but the mist from the falls is refreshing.
#8

Cunningham Falls State Park

$5/vehicle Ages 3+ Thurmont, MD

A 78-foot cascading waterfall at the end of a short, easy hike through the woods. The trail to the falls is under a mile and mostly flat, so even little kids can handle it. In summer, the Hunting Creek Lake area has a sandy beach where kids can swim and splash around. A waterfall hike plus lake swimming for five bucks is hard to beat.

Highlights

🌊78-Foot Waterfall: Short, easy hike to Maryland's largest cascading waterfall. Kids can wade in the pool at the base.
🌊Lake Swimming: Sandy beach at Hunting Creek Lake with lifeguards in summer. Shallow entry, great for toddlers.
🌳Shaded Trails: Dense tree canopy keeps it cooler than the city. Multiple easy trails for families.
📍 14039 Catoctin Hollow Rd, Thurmont, MD
🕐 Daily sunrise-sunset
💰 $5/vehicle (in-state), $7 (out-of-state)
🚗 70 min from DC
Summer tip: The lake fills up fast on weekends. Get there by 10am or you might not get in. Bring water shoes for the rocky creek at the waterfall base. Pack a picnic because there's no food onsite.
#9

Billy Goat Trail Section C

FREE (with NPS pass) Ages 5+ Great Falls, MD

If your kids are old enough to scramble over rocks and you want a hike that feels like an adventure, this is the one. Section C is the easiest of the three Billy Goat Trail segments. It has some rock hopping and scrambling, but nothing too scary. The trail runs along the Potomac with great river views. About 1.6 miles round trip.

Highlights

🧗Rock Scrambling: Just enough challenge to feel like an adventure without being dangerous for school-age kids.
🌎River Views: Walk right along the Potomac. Beautiful in every season but especially nice in summer shade.
🚶C&O Canal Towpath: Flat, wide path back to the parking area. Easy cool-down walk after the scramble.
📍 C&O Canal, Great Falls area, MD
🕐 Daily sunrise-sunset
💰 Free with NPS pass ($20/vehicle at Great Falls)
🚗 20 min from DC
Summer tip: Start early to beat the heat. Bring at least one water bottle per person. Closed-toe shoes with grip are a must. Don't attempt Section A with young kids, it's genuinely difficult.
#10

Burke Lake Park

$5 parking All Ages Fairfax, VA

This park has a little bit of everything and none of it costs much. A miniature train ride, a carousel, mini golf, fishing, a playground, and a 4.7-mile paved trail around the lake. We've spent entire summer Saturdays here without spending more than $20 total. The train ride through the woods is the biggest hit with kids under 7.

Highlights

🚆Miniature Train: Runs through the woods on a real track. Kids love it. A few bucks per ride.
🎠Carousel & Mini Golf: Classic summer activities at park prices, not theme park prices.
🚶Lake Trail: 4.7-mile paved loop. Stroller-friendly, shaded in sections, with benches along the way.

🕐 Daily 7am-dusk; rides open 10am (summer)

#11

Calvert Cliffs State Park

FREE Ages 4+ Lusby, MD

A 1.8-mile hike through the woods that ends at a Chesapeake Bay beach where you can hunt for shark teeth fossils. Real shark teeth, millions of years old, just sitting in the sand and gravel. My daughter found seven on her first visit. Kids who like treasure hunts or dinosaurs will be completely focused for an hour.

Highlights

🦀Fossil Hunting: Shark teeth from the Miocene era. Look in the gravel at the waterline. Small, dark, triangular shapes.
🏖Beach: Sandy Chesapeake Bay beach at the end of the trail. Kids can wade and splash.
