For one weekend in September, the streets around Bethesda Row close to cars and fill with the booths of more than 180 juried artists from around the country: painting, ceramics, glass, jewelry, photography. It is free to walk, compact enough to cover in about an hour, and surrounded on every block by places for lunch, coffee, or an emergency ice cream.

Fair warning: this is an art fair, not a kids' festival, and plenty of booths hold breakable things at toddler height. It still works as a family outing because it is short, free, and a quick walk from the Red Line. Go in the morning when the aisles are wide open, let the kids vote on their favorite weird sculpture, and be done by lunch. Around 30,000 people come through over the weekend, and afternoons get shoulder-to-shoulder.

Parent Tips 💡

• ✓Morning is the window: Between 10am and noon you get open aisles, easy strollers, and artists with time to chat. Afternoons are elbow-to-elbow.
• ✓Give the 'eyes, not hands' talk before booth one: A lot of the work is glass and ceramics at exactly grabbing height. One reminder up front beats six apologies later.
• ✓Split duties in narrow booths: One adult browses in, the other does a slow lap outside with the kids. Swap every few booths and everyone gets a turn.
• ✓Turn it into a game: Have each kid pick a favorite piece per block and defend the choice at lunch. Free entertainment, and you learn strange things about your children.
• ✓Eat early or late: Bethesda Row restaurants pack out from noon to 1:30 on festival days. An 11:30 lunch with kids is a power move, not a defeat.
• ✓Making a full weekend of it: Adams Morgan Day runs Sunday, Sept 13 across the river, so a two-festival weekend is on the table if your crew has the legs.
