Great American State Fair on the National Mall
For a couple of weeks this summer the National Mall turns into a state fair, with a Ferris wheel parked between the monuments and pavilions from all 50 states plus the territories. It runs June 25 through July 10 as part of the America 250 lead-up, and it's free to walk in. You'll find regional food (think lobster rolls, BBQ, shaved ice), live music and cultural performances, military flyovers, and a lot of room for kids to roam. If you've ever wanted to sample food from a dozen states without leaving DC, this is the easy version.
It's big and out in the open, so plan it like a Mall day rather than a quick stop. Hours stretch later on Thursday through Saturday (until 11pm), and July 4th runs to midnight, but mornings and early afternoons are the calmest window for younger kids before the heat and crowds build. Strollers are fine on the gravel paths. There's no admission fee, though the Ferris wheel and some food vendors cost extra, so bring a card and a little cash.

Parent Tips π‘
- Go in the morning. Doors open at 10am and that first stretch is the coolest and least crowded. By mid-afternoon the lines and the heat both pick up.
- Pack water and sunscreen. The Mall has almost no shade. Bring a refillable bottle, hats, and sunscreen, and know where the nearest restrooms are before the kids need them.
- Bring a card and small bills. Walking in is free, but the Ferris wheel and food vendors are not. Cards work most places; a little cash helps at the busy stands.
- Set a meeting spot. It's a huge, open space and easy to get separated. Pick a landmark (the Ferris wheel works) in case anyone wanders off.
- Skip July 4th if you have little ones. The fair is open that day but the Mall is packed for fireworks. An ordinary weekday visit is far easier with a stroller.
- Pair it with a free museum. You're steps from the Air and Space and Natural History museums. Duck into one for AC and a bathroom break when everyone overheats.
