Leesburg Independence Day Celebration

Leesburg puts on one of the best Fourth of July celebrations in Loudoun County, and it's the kind of event that makes you feel like summer is exactly where it should be. The whole thing takes place at Ida Lee Park, which is a great venue for families because there's tons of green space, easy parking (if you get there early enough), and room for kids to run around without worrying about traffic. The afternoon and evening build toward the main event: a fireworks show that starts around 9:15pm. Between the live music on the main stage, food from local vendors, and a dedicated kids' activity area, there's plenty to do while you wait.

We like to get there in the late afternoon, which gives us time to grab a good spot on the hill before it gets packed. The kids head straight for the activities area, which usually has inflatables, games, and other hands-on stuff to keep them busy. Meanwhile, we set up our blankets and chairs, and honestly just enjoy sitting outside listening to live music while the kids wear themselves out. The food vendors have a solid selection, so we typically skip packing dinner and just buy from the trucks. You'll find everything from barbecue to funnel cakes, and the lines move pretty quickly if you eat on the earlier side.

The fireworks display itself is really good. It's not the National Mall, but for a community show, it's impressive, and the fact that you're sitting comfortably on a grassy hill instead of crammed onto a sidewalk makes a big difference. One tip we learned from experience: bug spray is not optional. Ida Lee Park is surrounded by trees, and once the sun goes down, the mosquitoes come out in force. Also, parking does fill up by late afternoon, especially the lots closest to the main event area. If you arrive by 4 or 5pm, you'll be in good shape. Later than that, and you might be walking a bit. Bring blankets, lawn chairs, and sunscreen for the afternoon. This is a full-day kind of event if you want it to be, or you can show up later just for the fireworks.
