After a summer of county fairs, this is the big one. The Maryland State Fair runs three long weekends in 2026: August 27-30, September 3-7 (that's the Labor Day stretch), and September 10-13 at the fairgrounds in Timonium, just north of Baltimore, about an hour from the DC area. You get the full state fair package: a midway loaded with rides and games, livestock barns where kids can walk right up to cows, pigs, goats, and sheep, 4-H exhibits from kids barely older than yours, live horse racing at the track, and every fried thing you can imagine on a stick. Our kids treat the animal barns like a free zoo, and honestly they're not wrong.

A few logistics worth knowing before you commit. On Thursdays the midway and buildings open at 5pm, which makes for a cheap, short evening visit that ends before total meltdown hour. Fridays through Sundays (plus Labor Day Monday) things open at 10am, and mornings are when the animal barns are most active. If the thought of fair parking makes you tired, Baltimore's Light Rail has a Timonium stop that drops you basically at the gate. Tickets and ride deals are posted on the fair's website, and it's worth checking before you go since advance prices are usually kinder than the gate.

• ✓Thursday evenings are the calm window. Gates open at 5pm, crowds are thinner, and the midway lights come on as it gets dark.
• ✓Do animal barns in the morning. That's when the barns are busiest with actual farm kids grooming and showing their animals, which is half the show.
• ✓Check ride deals before you go. The fair posts admission and wristband specials on its site, and advance pricing usually beats the gate.
• ✓Set a food plan. One shared funnel cake goes further than three individual ones. You will not win every food negotiation, but you can win that one.
• ✓The Labor Day weekend (Sep 3-7) is the longest and busiest stretch. If crowds wear your crew down, aim for the first or last weekend instead.
