Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade in Silver Spring
This is billed as the only Thanksgiving parade in the DC area, and it happens in downtown Silver Spring. If your kids like big balloons and loud marching bands, it is a short, easy morning. It steps off at 10am and runs a couple of hours at most.
The route starts at Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street, heads south down Georgia Avenue and ends at Silver Spring Avenue. You get the giant inflatable turkeys and penguins, floats, bands, dance troupes, and Santa and his elves. I could not find a ticket or fee listed anywhere, so I would assume you watch from the sidewalk, but check the Silver Spring Downtown site before you go.

Getting There πΊοΈ
Parent Tips π‘
- Get there 30 to 45 minutes early. That gives you time to find a spot at the curb. Short kids need the front row.
- Pack for cold hands. Late November mornings can be chilly and you will be standing still. Warm gloves and a thermos help.
- Bring ear protection for toddlers. Marching bands are loud right up close. Small headphones make a big difference.
- Think about where you will eat after. Ellsworth Drive is lined with restaurants. Have a plan or put your name in early.
- Check the downtown site for the route. Road closure details can change. See silverspringdowntown.com the day before.
