Peach Picking Near DC
Strawberry season gets all the attention, but peach picking is the better outing with kids. The fruit is big and easy to spot, the trees are low enough for short arms, and nobody has to crouch in a muddy row. Around DC the season starts in early July and runs into late August. Homestead Farm in Poolesville usually opens its peach orchard first, with yellow peaches running about $2.19 a pound, and Butler's Orchard in Germantown follows as its varieties ripen through the summer.
The one rule of pick-your-own: check before you drive. Farms open and close picking days based on what's actually ripe, so a quick look at the farm's website or Facebook page the morning of your trip saves you a 45 minute drive to a closed orchard. Weekday mornings are the calm window. Weekends get busy by mid-morning and the best low-hanging fruit goes first.

Parent Tips π‘
- Check the farm's site the morning you go. Picking days open and close with ripeness. Both farms post what's available and which orchard rows are open.
- Pick slightly firm peaches. They ripen on the counter in a day or two, and firm ones survive the car ride home without turning to jam.
- Bring wipes. Peach juice gets everywhere. A cooler in the trunk keeps the haul from cooking on the drive back.
- Go early on weekdays if you can. Cooler for the kids, quieter rows, and better fruit within reach.
- Set a bucket budget. You pay by the pound and kids are enthusiastic pickers. Agree on one bucket before entering the orchard.
