Fairfax County Drone Light Show 2026
Fairfax County does its July 4th sky show a little differently. Instead of fireworks, a swarm of drones lights up over Lake Fairfax Park in animated patterns set to music. It runs the evening of June 27, ahead of the holiday itself, so it is a way to get the celebration in without competing with the big July 4 crowds downtown.
For kids who cover their ears at fireworks, this is a calmer option. The drones are quiet compared to the usual booms, and there is music, food trucks, and room to sit on the grass before the show starts. Admission is free, though you pay for parking, and it is worth buying that ahead of time.

Getting There πΊοΈ
Parent Tips π‘
- Buy parking online in advance. It is cheaper than paying at the gate and the entry line moves faster.
- Get there before sunset. The lot fills up early, and you want time to find a grassy spot and settle the kids before the show.
- Bring chairs or a blanket. You will be sitting on open grass. Camp chairs for the grown-ups and a blanket for the kids work well.
- Pack bug spray. It is a wooded park near the water in late June. Mosquitoes come out at dusk, right when you are waiting.
- Decide your exit plan. Leaving with everyone else means a slow crawl out of the lot. Either head out right as the show ends or wait it out and let the kids run a bit first.
