The Takoma Park Folk Festival is an all-volunteer, all-free music festival that takes over Takoma Park Middle School for one Sunday: seven stages inside and out, with folk, blues, bluegrass, and world music running 10:30am to 5:30pm, rain or shine. Between sets there's a juried craft show indoors, community tables out front, and food vendors around the grounds. It's a low-key day: blankets on the lawn, music in the background, nobody rushing anywhere.

The Children's Nook is where kids will want to camp out, with face painting plus performers and activities aimed straight at them all day. Pack camp chairs or a blanket for the outdoor stages, and note the one house rule: no food inside the school building. On-site parking is very limited, so use the free shuttles from the satellite parking stops (three of them; locations at tpff.org) or ride the Red Line to Takoma and walk about 20 minutes.

• ✓Hit the Children's Nook first: face paint and a kid-sized show early on buys you a couple of relaxed sets at the main stages later.
• ✓Bring seating: camp chairs or a blanket for the lawn stages. Shade is patchy, so claim the field edges early if it's sunny.
• ✓Snack before going indoors: food stays outside the school building, so time the craft show and indoor stages around meals.
• ✓Take the shuttle, not your luck: the on-site lot is small and fills immediately. The satellite-lot shuttles are free and kids treat the ride as part of the event.
• ✓Keep it on the calendar even if it rains: with indoor stages and the craft show, this one actually works as a rainy-day plan.
• ✓Carry a few small bills: entry is free, but food vendors, crafts, and the donation bucket all take cash happily.
