ALX Jazz Fest & Tall Ships in Alexandria
Old Town Alexandria pulls out all the stops this weekend with two events happening at once: the ALX Jazz Fest and a Tall Ships Festival along the waterfront. Imagine walking along the Potomac, live jazz coming from stages on both sides, and actual tall ships docked in the harbor where your kids can climb aboard and explore. It is one of those weekends where you show up thinking you will stay for an hour and end up spending the whole afternoon because there is just too much good stuff happening.
The jazz festival brings musicians to stages throughout the waterfront area, and the music ranges from smooth jazz to more upbeat, danceable stuff that gets kids moving. My daughter has no idea what jazz is in theory, but put her near a live saxophone and she is dancing within thirty seconds. The tall ships are the other half of the equation. These are full-size historic sailing vessels, and kids can board them, talk to the crews, and get a sense of what it was like to sail the seas before engines existed. The combination of music and ships sounds random on paper, but it works perfectly in practice.
Old Town Alexandria is already one of the best family neighborhoods in the area, so the festival just adds layers to an already great destination. After the music and ships, you can walk down King Street for ice cream, explore the torpedo factory art center, or just sit on a bench by the water and let the kids run. The whole three-day event is free to attend, and there is no registration required. Friday evening is usually more chill, Saturday is the busiest, and Sunday morning is perfect if you want the ships without the crowds. Take the free King Street Trolley from the Metro and skip the parking situation entirely.

Parent Tips 💡
- Start with the ships: The tall ships are the highlight for most kids. Go first thing in the morning before the lines get long.
- Free trolley: The King Street Trolley runs from the Metro to the waterfront for free. Skip the parking headache.
- Bring a stroller (maybe): The waterfront is stroller-friendly, but the tall ship decks are not. Plan to park the stroller if you board a ship.
- Three days, no rush: The festival runs Friday through Sunday. You do not have to see everything in one day.
- Dinner in Old Town: Turn the afternoon into a full outing. Old Town has tons of kid-friendly restaurants within walking distance.
