FIFA World Cup Fan Zone in DC
The World Cup is coming to the US this summer, and DC is going all in with a free fan zone right on the National Mall. Starting June 11, the area will have giant outdoor screens broadcasting every single match, plus live music, food vendors, and a whole section for kids to kick a ball around and try soccer skills challenges. Even if your family is not that into soccer, the energy of a World Cup crowd watching a big match outdoors is something worth experiencing at least once.
For families with younger kids, the best times to visit are during the morning or early afternoon matches, before the after-work crowds show up. The kids' activity zone is separate from the main viewing area, so they can play without dodging adults who are glued to the screen. There will be food trucks representing countries from around the world, which turns lunch into its own little adventure. My kids are picky eaters at home but somehow become food explorers when the food comes from a truck at an outdoor festival.
The Fan Zone runs all the way through the tournament in July, so you do not have to cram everything into one visit. Drop by for an hour on a weekday, come back for a weekend match, or make it a regular thing. The whole setup is free to enter, and there is no registration or tickets needed. Just show up. If DC is hosting this once-in-a-lifetime event in our backyard, it would be a shame not to take the kids at least once. They might not remember the score, but they will remember the crowd roaring when a goal goes in.

Parent Tips 💡
- Check the match schedule: The Fan Zone is open daily, but the atmosphere really picks up during live matches. Plan around games you want to watch.
- Sunscreen and water: The National Mall has limited shade. Bring hats, sunscreen, and water bottles for the kids.
- Stroller-friendly: The area is flat and accessible, but it can get crowded during popular matches. A carrier might be easier for toddlers.
- Arrive early for big matches: US team games and knockout rounds draw the biggest crowds. Get there at least an hour early for a good viewing spot.
- Free activities: The kids' zone has soccer drills, face painting, and interactive games. These are included at no cost.
