Swedish Midsummer Celebration in DC

Every June, the House of Sweden in Georgetown throws a Midsummer party that feels like stepping into a Scandinavian fairy tale. There is a real maypole on the lawn, kids and adults dancing around it with ribbons, flower crowns everywhere, and Swedish folk music filling the air. My kids were completely mesmerized the first time we went. They had never seen anything like a maypole dance, and honestly, neither had I. It is one of those events that is genuinely different from everything else on the DC family calendar.

The flower crown station is the main draw for younger kids. They sit down, pick their flowers, and make their own crowns to wear for the rest of the day. It is a simple activity, but something about wearing a flower crown makes every three-year-old feel like royalty. There is also Swedish food available for purchase, usually things like meatballs, cinnamon rolls, and various pastries. Nothing fancy, but it adds to the whole experience. The House of Sweden itself sits right on the Georgetown waterfront, so the setting is beautiful even when nothing is happening.

What makes this event stand out is how genuine it feels. This is not a commercial festival with sponsors everywhere. It is a cultural celebration put on by the Swedish Embassy, and you can tell the people organizing it actually care about sharing their traditions. The dancing, the singing, the food, it all feels real. And it is completely free. I recommend getting there in time for the maypole dance, which is usually the centerpiece of the afternoon. After the celebration wraps up, Georgetown is right there for ice cream, a walk along the canal, or just wandering through the neighborhood. It is an easy, memorable Saturday outing.
