U.S. Navy Band: Schoolhouse Rock Live!
If your kids watch Schoolhouse Rock, they already know the songs. "I'm Just a Bill," "Conjunction Junction," "Three Is a Magic Number." Now imagine hearing those songs performed live by the U.S. Navy Band in full concert mode. The Navy Band puts on a proper show, with real arrangements, talented musicians, and enough energy to keep even the squirmiest toddler engaged for a while. And it is completely free.
The concert takes place at the U.S. Navy Memorial plaza, which is right on Pennsylvania Avenue. It is an outdoor venue, so you will want to bring a blanket or low chairs and claim your spot early. The plaza is not enormous, and these concerts draw a crowd. Last time we went to a Navy Band family show, we got there about 25 minutes early and found a decent spot off to the side. Not perfect, but the sound carries well and the kids could still see the performers.
What I like about this particular concert is that it is not just background music. The Schoolhouse Rock songs are interactive by nature. Kids sing along, they clap, and they actually learn things without realizing it. My oldest came home from a similar show and casually explained how a bill becomes a law at dinner, which was both hilarious and oddly informative. The Navy Memorial is also right next to the National Archives, so if you want to turn this into a bigger outing, you can pop over and see the Constitution and Declaration of Independence while you are in the neighborhood. Totally free afternoon, educational without trying too hard, and the kids think they are just going to a concert. That is the sweet spot.

Parent Tips 💡
- Bring a blanket or chairs: Seating is first-come, first-served at the plaza. A blanket on the ground works well for little ones.
- Get there early: These Navy Band concerts are popular and the plaza fills up. Aim for 30 minutes before start time.
- Teach the songs first: If your kids know the Schoolhouse Rock songs ahead of time, they will have way more fun singing along.
- Snacks: There are no food vendors at the Navy Memorial, so bring your own snacks and water.
- Combine with other activities: The National Archives is right across the street if you want to extend the outing.
