Art All Night takes over DC neighborhoods for two nights in September, and every ward gets its own lineup. Murals go up on the spot. Dancers use the sidewalk as a stage. Bands play out of storefronts and parking lots that are normally just parking lots. In 2025 the city counted more than 250,000 people and over 1,200 artists across the whole thing, so it is big, but it is also spread out. You are not standing in one giant crowd. You pick a neighborhood and walk it.

The name is a little misleading if you have young kids. The programming really does run late, but the early evening block is the family part. Go between 6 and 9pm, see the art, let the kids watch a performance or two, then leave before the crowd shifts older. The city put out an app last year that maps every activation, which helps a lot when you are trying to figure out whether the block you are standing on has anything for a 5-year-old.

Parent Tips 💡

• ✓Go early. The 6 to 9pm window is the family stretch. After that the crowd skews adult and the music gets louder.
• ✓Pick one neighborhood and stay put. Trying to hop wards in one night with kids does not work. You will spend the whole evening in transit.
• ✓Download the app before you leave the house. Cell service gets patchy when a few thousand people crowd one block.
• ✓Bring a carrier instead of a stroller if your kid still fits. Sidewalks get tight and some venues are up a step or two.
• ✓Eat first. Food is around but lines are long, and a hungry 4-year-old at 8pm is its own kind of event.
