A Free Send-Off Into the School Year

The last Saturday before the school year is a strange one in our house. Everyone is half excited and half in denial, the supply list is mostly bought but not quite, and nobody wants to talk about bedtimes yet. Springfield Town Center has built an afternoon around exactly that mood. The Back to School Bonanza runs 11am to 4pm outside the center, with a vendor fair, hands-on activities for kids, and live performances by local youth groups on a small stage.

It is free, which is the main thing, and it is low commitment, which is the second thing. You can do an hour and leave, or you can make a day of it and knock out the last of the school shopping while you are already there. The performances are the part worth timing: they are kids and teens from the area, which means the crowd is full of proud families and the energy is warm. If the August heat wins, the mall is right there with air conditioning and a food court.

• ✓Check the stage schedule first. The youth performances are the highlight; everything else you can browse around them.
• ✓Bring water. It is an outdoor event in late August and there is very little shade.
• ✓Go early if you hate crowds. The 11am start is calmer than mid-afternoon.
• ✓Use the mall as your escape hatch. Air conditioning, bathrooms, and food are all steps away.
• ✓Bring a bag. Vendor fairs mean freebies, and small hands fill up fast.
