This August brings two things nobody in the DMV has seen before: IndyCar racing around the National Mall and a weeklong national farmers market, both part of America's 250th birthday summer. Freedom 250 Grand Prix: IndyCar on the National Mall
FREEFor the first time ever, IndyCar races on a street circuit around the National Mall, part of America's 250th birthday summer. Real race cars at 180 mph with the Capitol in the background is the kind of thing kids talk about for years. Practice and qualifying Saturday, the race on Sunday.
💡 Parent tip: This one is LOUD. Bring ear protection for kids (over-ear works best for little ones), and take Metro; road closures will be everywhere.

Panda Fest DC
TICKETEDOne of the country's biggest Asian food festivals makes its DC debut: 90+ vendors, 200+ street foods, lion dances, and cultural performances on Pennsylvania Avenue. Kids do great here; it's basically a giant outdoor food court with a show.
💡 Parent tip: Go at opening time. Lines at the famous vendors triple by lunch, and the morning slot beats the August heat.

Great American Farmers Market
FREEA weeklong farmers market on the Mall for America's 250th: 80+ farmers and makers from all over the country, plus daily family programming. It's the county-fair produce barn, scaled up to national size.
