The Playground at the National Building Museum
Every summer the National Building Museum turns its Great Hall into one giant installation. Past years gave us the ball pit known as the BEACH and a walk-through maze. The 2026 edition is called The Playground, and it's exactly what it sounds like: nine different play areas built around climbing, building, and open-ended messing around, all indoors under the museum's enormous columns. It opened July 3 and runs through August 30, which covers the whole stretch of summer when it's too hot to be outside past 10am.
This is the answer when someone asks what to do with kids in DC in late July. The museum sits directly across from the Judiciary Square Metro stop, the air conditioning is glorious, and the exhibit works for a wide age range. Toddlers stay in the softer zones while big kids disappear into the climbing structures. Check nbm.org for current admission prices and timed entry before you go, since Block Party summers get crowded on rainy days and weekends.

Parent Tips π‘
- Book timed entry ahead on rainy days. Every parent in the region has the same idea when it pours, and summer weekends fill up too.
- Weekday mornings are the calm window. Camp groups come through midday, so right at opening is your best shot at a quieter Great Hall.
- Budget more time than you think. Kids do not want to leave. Plan on a couple of hours, plus the permanent exhibits if yours are into construction.
- Do the math on a membership. If you'll come twice or more over the summer, a family membership can beat paying per visit. Check current rates on their site.
- Food is easy nearby. There's no shortage of quick lunch spots around Judiciary Square and Gallery Place when everyone's played out.
