Jazz in the Garden 2026
This is one of those summer traditions that just works with kids. Every Friday evening from late May through mid-August, the National Gallery of Art's Sculpture Garden fills up with families, blankets, and live music. The garden gates reopen at 5pm and the concert kicks off at 6pm. You spread out on the grass, grab food from the on-site vendors, and the kids wander between the sculptures while you actually get to sit and listen to music for a minute.
This year's theme is "American Sounds," a nod to the country's 250th birthday. The lineup spans everything from Appalachian folk to Creole jazz to Hill Country blues. On select nights (May 22, May 29, June 12, and July 24) there are pre-show dance classes, which is genuinely fun for kids who like to move. The Sculpture Garden fountain is right in the middle of it all, and younger kids tend to gravitate there. It fills up, so plan to arrive when gates open if you want a good spot.
The practical side of bringing kids is pretty straightforward. You can bring your own food and drinks, or grab something from the on-site vendors who set up near the entrance. We usually pack a simple picnic because the vendor lines get long once the music starts. Blankets are the way to go since there is limited bench seating and it fills immediately. The ground is grass, so bring something waterproof if it rained earlier in the day. Strollers are welcome and the garden paths are wide enough to navigate, though once you are settled in a spot with your blanket, the stroller mostly just sits folded next to you. For families, the sweet spot is arriving at five, eating your picnic while the kids explore the sculptures, and then settling in for music at six. If your little ones hit a wall before the concert ends, there is no pressure to stay. Plenty of families slip out by seven-thirty, and that is completely normal. The whole experience feels relaxed rather than structured, which is exactly what Friday evenings should be.

Getting There πΊοΈ
Parent Tips π‘
- Enter the lottery early in the week. It opens Monday at 10am and closes Friday at noon. Set a phone reminder for Monday morning. Popular dates go fast.
- Bring a blanket and arrive at 5pm sharp. The good spots near the fountain go quickly. If you get there at 5:30, you'll still find space, but farther from the stage.
- Pack your own snacks for the kids. The on-site food lines get long. Having goldfish crackers and juice boxes ready means less waiting with hungry kids.
- The fountain area is the kid zone. Most families with younger children end up near the central fountain. Kids splash around (not officially, but it happens) and play between the sculptures.
- Leave by 7:30 if you have small kids. The concerts run until around 8:30pm, but toddlers and younger kids usually hit their limit before that. No shame in the early exit.
- Try a dance class night. The pre-show dance classes are low-pressure and fun for kids. May 22 and June 12 are good ones to target early in the season.
