DC Spray Parks Open for Summer
If you have kids under ten, spray parks are basically the whole reason summer in DC is survivable. The Department of Parks and Recreation runs spray parks and splash pads all across the city, and they are completely free to use with a DPR membership (which is also free for DC residents). Right now they are open on weekends from 10am to 6pm. Starting June 22, they switch to daily hours, which is when things really get good. We go at least twice a week once daily hours kick in, and honestly it is the simplest summer outing you can plan. Pack towels, sunscreen, and a change of clothes and you are set.
The spray parks vary quite a bit in size and setup. Some are small ground-level spray pads with a few nozzles, perfect for toddlers who are still nervous around water. Others are bigger setups with arching sprayers, timed water cannons, and splash buckets that dump on everyone underneath. Our favorites include the one at Takoma Recreation Center, which has a nice shaded area nearby for parents, and the Turkey Thicket spray park in Brookland, which tends to draw a fun crowd of neighborhood families. Georgetown Waterfront Park also has a wading area that younger kids love. Each spray park has its own personality, so it is worth trying a few different ones to see which your family likes best.
One thing to know is that spray parks occasionally close for maintenance, especially early in the season. DPR posts updates on their website and social media, so it is a good idea to check before heading out to a specific location. The free DPR membership takes about five minutes to set up online and covers your whole family. Some spray parks have restroom facilities nearby and some do not, so plan accordingly. We always bring a small cooler with water bottles and snacks because the combination of heat, running, and water play makes kids hungry fast. If you are looking for the easiest, cheapest, most kid-approved summer activity in DC, this is it. No reservations, no tickets, no planning. Just show up and let them get soaked.

Parent Tips 💡
- Sign up for DPR membership before you go. It is free and takes a few minutes online at dpr.dc.gov. You need it for access to spray parks and pools.
- Bring towels and a change of clothes. Kids get completely soaked. We keep a "spray park bag" in the car all summer with towels, dry clothes, and plastic bags for wet stuff.
- Apply sunscreen before you leave home. Reapply every couple hours. Water play and sunburn go hand in hand if you are not careful.
- Water shoes or old sneakers are a good idea. The spray pad surfaces can get hot in direct sun, and some have rough textures. Flip-flops tend to fly off when kids run.
- Pack snacks and water bottles. Most spray parks do not have concessions nearby. Hungry, thirsty kids after an hour of running through water sprayers will thank you.
- Go early on hot days. By noon on a 95-degree Saturday the popular spray parks fill up. If you arrive at 10am when they open, you get the best experience.
