Mules, a Canal Boat and a Puppet Show
Georgetown Heritage is holding its second Canal Day on Sunday, October 11, from 11 to 3, along the C&O Canal by Lock 3 and the Mule Yard. It's free, and it's one of the easier ways I know to get kids interested in a piece of DC history, because the history comes with mules.
Blue Sky Puppet Theatre does a show at 11, and Jam with Jamie runs a kids' dance party at 12:30. In between you can meet the mules that pull the canal boat, decorate a pumpkin, bob for doughnuts, try some woodworking and play lawn games. Little ones get a see, touch and play area on the docked canal boat, and the band Hollertown plays bluegrass all day. There are free treats too.
Food trucks line Thomas Jefferson Street if you want lunch, and The Graham has a beer garden for the grown-ups. Georgetown Heritage asks people to RSVP on Eventbrite, which takes a minute. If you're going to Family Day at the House of Sweden on Saturday, it's only a few blocks away, so you could do Georgetown both days.
