The Great Frederick Fair 2026
The Great Frederick Fair is the biggest week on Frederick County's calendar: nine days of carnival rides, livestock barns, grandstand shows, and fair food, about an hour northwest of DC. Around 240,000 people come through the gates each year, and the whole thing still runs on 4-H kids showing their cows and rabbits. For families the math is friendly, because kids 10 and under get in free every single day.
Here is what kids actually remember afterward: the animal barns. Walk through in the morning when the cows are being washed and the goats are at their loudest, then hit the midway once the rides start up. Buy admission online before opening day and adults pay $8 instead of $15 at the gate. If your kid is a ride kid, the $35 Jack Pass bundles one admission with an all-day ride wristband and pays for itself fast.

Parent Tips π‘
- Buy tickets online before opening day: Advance admission is $8 versus $15 at the gate. For two adults that difference covers a round of ride tickets. Kids 10 and under are free either way.
- Do barns first, rides second: The animals are calmest in the morning, and the midway usually gets going later than the gates open anyway. By the time you finish the barns, the rides are warmed up.
- Run the Jack Pass math: At $35 for admission plus an all-day ride wristband, it beats individual ride tickets after a handful of rides. Worth it for ride-obsessed kids, skippable for barn-obsessed ones.
- Go on a weekday evening for smaller crowds: Weekend afternoons are the crush. A Tuesday or Wednesday after school gets you shorter lines and cooler temperatures.
- Bring some cash: Most vendors take cards now, but a few food stands and ticket booths still move faster with cash in hand.
- Use the hand-washing stations: They are posted right outside the animal barns. Make it a rule before anyone touches a corn dog.
- Strollers are fine on the midway, tight in the barns: If your kid can walk the barn aisles, park the stroller outside and carry the snacks.
