Home Rule Music Festival
The Home Rule Music Festival is back for its fifth year, and I'm honestly a little giddy about this one. Nine hours of free, outdoor music at the Walter Reed campus in DC, with a lineup that has no business being this good for a free event. We're talking Chuck Brown Band, Trouble Funk, and Sun Ra Arkestra. If you grew up anywhere near DC, you already know what go-go music does to a crowd. Even if you didn't, your kids will figure it out fast. The whole place turns into a dance floor. Jazz, funk, hip-hop, soul, it's all there, and it's all live. But here's the part that really sold me as a parent: they have a dedicated Kids Zone right near the main entrance with its own activities and entertainment. So while you're swaying to Trouble Funk, your little ones have their own space to play and be loud. Beyond the music, there's a vinyl record fair that's genuinely fun to browse (my husband spent way too long at the crates last year), live mural painting happening throughout the day, and plenty of food vendors so nobody has to pack a cooler. This is the kind of afternoon where you throw a blanket on the grass, let the kids run around, and just enjoy being outside with good music playing. If you've never been to Home Rule, this is the year to change that.

Getting There πΊοΈ
Parent Tips π‘
- Kids Zone location: It's near the main entrance, so you can find it easily as soon as you walk in.
- Bring a blanket: There's plenty of grass to sit on, and you'll want a spot to camp out between sets.
- Food vendors take cards: No need to scramble for cash. Most vendors accept credit and debit.
- Vinyl record fair: Worth browsing even if you don't collect records. It's a fun side activity for music-loving parents.
- Arrive by noon: The festival kicks off at 12 PM, and getting there early means better spots on the lawn.
- Sun protection: Sunscreen and hats are a must. You'll be outside for hours, and shade can be limited.
