NSO Labor Day Concert

Sunday, Sept 6, 8pm FREE Best for ages 6+

Free, Indoors, and the Ticket Part Needs Explaining

If you have this one on the calendar from past years, note the change: the NSO's Labor Day concert is not on the Capitol lawn this year. It moved indoors to DAR Constitution Hall, and it happens Sunday, September 6 at 8pm. It is still completely free. Enrico Lopez-Yañez conducts, vocalist Ender Thomas sings, and the program is a set of American favorites, including Karen LeFrak's American Promise with narrator Dr. Alveda King.

The ticket situation is the part worth reading twice. Tickets are free, you reserve them online, up to four per order, and you bring the confirmation email with you, printed or on your phone. But here is the catch: the reservation does not hold a seat for you. Check-in opens 90 minutes before the concert, at 6:30pm, and any seat still unclaimed at 7:45pm gets released to a giveaway line at the door. So reserve, then treat the night like a first come, first served show and get there early. The flip side is good news: if you never got a reservation, that giveaway line is a real way in.

One honest note about bringing kids. An 8pm start in a concert hall is a different evening from a blanket on the lawn. There is no room to roam, no picnic, and no wiggling through the quiet parts. This works for kids who can sit through a movie, and it works badly for toddlers at bedtime. If yours are still small, either skip this year or plan to tag-team, with one parent walking a lap in the lobby when the squirming starts.

Getting There πŸ—ΊοΈ

METROFarragut West (Orange/Blue/Silver) is the closest, about a 12 minute walk. Foggy Bottom-GWU is a slightly longer one.
WALKINGThe hall sits near the Ellipse at 18th and D. Sidewalks are flat and easy, but strollers are awkward inside a concert hall, so bring a carrier if you have a little one.
PARKINGStreet parking around 18th and D is thin on a holiday weekend and nearby garages fill early. Metro is the calmer choice.
