An Art Show, a 1921 Carousel, and a Whole Weekend of Free Stuff

Glen Echo Park closes out summer with its biggest weekend of the year, September 4–7. The centerpiece is the 55th annual Labor Day Art Show in the Spanish Ballroom, more than 400 artists from around the mid-Atlantic showing ceramics, glass, paintings, jewelry, and photography, open Saturday through Monday from noon to 6pm. Admission is free, with a $10 suggested donation. On Saturday there’s also Global Rhythms, a free showcase of music, dance, and storytelling from cultures around the world, running noon to 6pm on the same grounds.

Here’s what makes this work with kids: the art show is maybe 30 minutes of their patience, but the park around it fills the rest of the day. The 1921 Dentzel carousel runs 11am to 5pm all weekend. The Puppet Co. has weekend shows of Little Red Riding Hood and the 3 Little Pigs. Glass and pottery studios open their doors so kids can watch artists at the wheel or the torch. Add the Praline Café and a couple of food vendors, and you’ve got a full afternoon without spending much beyond lunch.

Parent Tips 💡

• ✓Go Saturday if you can only pick one day: That’s when everything overlaps: Global Rhythms performances, puppet shows, open studios, and the art show all running at once.
• ✓Ride the carousel before noon: The line is shortest right at 11am when it opens. It’s a real 1921 Dentzel with hand-carved animals, and most kids want to go twice.
• ✓Set the ‘museum hands’ rule before the ballroom: The art show aisles are narrow and a lot of the work is ceramic and glass. Hands in pockets or holding yours. Practice it once at the door.
• ✓Tag-team the art show: One parent browses while the other takes kids to the lawn or carousel, then swap. Thirty focused minutes each beats one distracted hour together.
• ✓Eat early or late: The café and food vendor lines peak 12:30–1:30 on Saturday. A picnic blanket on the lawn works too, and nobody minds.
• ✓Check the puppet show schedule first: Shows run 11:30am and 2:30pm on Saturday and Sunday and seats sell out. Book online, then build the carousel and lunch around your showtime.
