Anime Weekend at the Convention Center

Every summer, tens of thousands of anime and gaming fans take over the Walter E. Washington Convention Center for Otakon, one of the biggest celebrations of Asian pop culture on the East Coast. It runs Friday, July 31 through Sunday, August 2 this year. If your kids are into Pokemon, Studio Ghibli, Minecraft, or drawing manga characters in the margins of their homework, walking these halls is a jaw-on-the-floor experience: elaborate cosplay everywhere you look, a dealers hall the size of several football fields, video game rooms, and panels on everything from drawing basics to how anime gets made.

The family math works better than you'd expect. Kids 8 and under get in free with a paying adult, and daytime hours on Saturday and Sunday are the most family-friendly window, with cosplay contests and all-ages programming. Evenings skew older and louder, so we treat this one as a daytime outing. It's big, it's crowded, and it's loud, which thrills some kids and overwhelms others, so know your audience. The convention center sits right on top of the Mt Vernon Sq Metro station, which makes getting there the easy part.
